This is a painting of Sidney Sussex College Cambridge which I painted recently as a commission. The architectural detail was daunting as were the perspective problems, as I was working from an under-exposed photograph which was distorted by the lens which affected the vertical lines. However, it was a challenge which I enjoyed especially when the colours went in and it sprang to life.

Canson paper which I used to paint Pastels is amazingly adaptable

and suits my acrylic and ink technique. It comes in a variety of colours, and here I used a buff and a pink one to influence the mood of the painting.

When I paint I put the outline in last, and up to then the composition looks very disorganised. The outline is magical and transforms the whole picture. The trick is to foresee the final result in my mind as I work.

I aim for a balance of colour and shade to make a cohesive whole,

Very relaxing when things go well, and very frustrating if they don't.

I went a little crazy today and painted St Katherine's Dock in a very loose ink and wash manner.

I normally make up my paler colours by adding white to a deeper version, but somehow a good pink had eluded me.
This week I bought a tube of acrylic CARNATION PINK , as the manufacturer called it.

Really the colours in a painting are secondary to the tonal values. I used a very restricted palette for this view of a flower market...just Cobalt Blue, Alizarine, Neutral Tint and a hint of Cadmium Red. It was painted extremely loosely so that the viewer's imagination comes into play.

I am always exploring new approaches to my work and this week I bought
some hot-pressed watercolour paper, which is very smoth and takes a pen
well.
I chose Cornish subjects and created a fantasy land by

Richmond-On-Thames is a fascinating historical town set south west of London. I went there this week on a beautiful day and took lots of photographs.
The river front has several fine buildings of architectural merit and I took one picture from the bridge of these, over the top of the umbrellas which cover the tables in a cafe.
I used a looser technique than usual, on Fabriano paper , which is almost fabric-like and gives a mellow soft result

I couldn't resist painting another Still Life.
This one, however, has my usual vivid colours toned down considerably.
I kept glazing over the items till I got the effect I wanted, and introduced the suggestion of a third dimension, rather than painting the objects flat against the background.

This painting in watercolour with its varied shapes and colours needs juggling with the paint to achieve its harmony.
Juxtaposition of contrasting hues creates a tension of its own together with varied shapes close to eachother.
The most vital feature is the face...if she turns out to be plain, the whole rationale of the picture is lost.
This lady looks somewhat distant and bored, but, at least, she is attractive

Painting Still Life is becoming an addiction, and this one was developed from a sketch I made without reference.
It developed into a technical challenge of balancing the shapes and the colours in order to achieve a harmony of sorts.
I hate intellectualising compositions...you either like the result or you don't....can you see it on your wall at home? That's the key question.

I have several Chinese articles which friends have given me and I assembled them and constructed this painting.
The ideogram is "cha"...no prizes for guessing its meaning.

The technique of joining up the background shapes to the objects, thereby creating new patterns, requires balanced colour contrasts, which are fun to work out

A client of mine requested me to paint a picture of Lake Garda, one of the lakes in the north of Italy.
I had to use a different palette from my usual range as the subject was very bright and colourful.

I always find that new tools or paper stimulate me to work .
I bought a beautiful little pen containing waterproof ink with a microfine tip yesterday, and, of course, I was dying to try it out.
Fine point lends itself to architectural subjects amongst others, so I sketched a Venetian scene on Arches paper and used watercolour paint as a wash.
I then tried a little figurative work which I called The Beergarden.

A Spanish friend of mine commissioned me to paint a picture of the beach near her home in Carnota, Northwest Spain.
This was a challenge as there were few features in the photograph I worked from, and the success or failure of my effort was dependent on my capturing the light and the colour perspective. I was allowed a little "artistic licence" but didn't abuse the privilege.
I used watercolour and a heavy weight Bockingford paper.

Polperro, Cornwall has a magic of its own and this is an ink and wash painting of the harbour.
I abandoned my usual flamboyant colours and restricted the palette to browns and bluish greys, with a touch of green umber for the plants and trees, leaving the white paper to catch the light.

This is a still life collage I made by cutting out the shapes in card, sticking them to a card surface and then painting them in acrylic paint and varnishing the result. It is a small collage, just 3" x 4".

I drew these three small pictures about 25 years ago, using an empty ballpoint pen to make the drawing by pressing hard on shoebox card, and then applying wax crayons over the indented sketch, starting with a yellow followed by progressively darker colours. As far as I know, nobody has ever tried this method of work before, probably because its size is limited and the end result is unpredictable.

I spent a good part of the day trying to paint a more abstract seascape and had a tricky time trying to get the right colour balance, having to rework the piece several times but eventually got there to my satisfaction.
I worked on mounting board with acrylic and guache mix as usual, and the proposed size was large for me, approximately 14"x11" . So maybe unfamiliarity with the size of the painting slowed me down too.
The subject of the painting is the Isle of Skye as seen from Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast of Scotland.

THIS IS THE FIRST BLOG THAT I HAVE EVER PUBLISHED and the feature on the left more or less tells you about me.
Apart from Art my other principal interest is Linguistics and I speak several languages including Mandarin, which I started to study in the year 2000. I wanted a hobby and a challenge which would keep my mind busy for the rest of my life. I think it was a good choice because I will never speak it perfectly, let alone read and write it, and it has a very strong artistic element to it, which appeals to me.

I am married to Anne, and we spent some years in the Canary Islands where I studied painting, and together we ran a business when we returned to London, selling coins, stamps,costume jewellery and my paintings too. It was fun while it lasted, but, like all good things it came to an end when the 9/11 atrocity put a stop to the American tourist trade in London.
The editor of a German art magazine called Lesart, saw my work in London while he was on holiday in the UK, and he engaged me as frontpage artist for four years...however, he discovered computerised artwork one day, and that was the end of my arrangement with him.

THIS PICTURE is of an introductory item for the readers of Lesart and was good publicity for my work in Germany. The magazine had 40,00 readers and was distributed all over the country. In those pre-computerised days I had to prepare loads of samples and post them to Germany for approval. Such is the nature of publishing that the editors were very fickle at times, and this was reflected when they changed their minds about the subject matter and I had to reject a lot of work I had prepared as it was no longer relevant.
The article dealt with how I came to be working for them, which readers found curious as I am from England, and it gave examples of how I interpreted their ideas about the subject matter for the front page for the particular edition in hand.
